VTT and AUTH present e-methanol research at CIMAC World Congress 2025

On May 2025 (19th-23rd), our partners VTT and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) presented their work to an audience of 950 highly specialised professionals at the CIMAC World Congress 2025 – a premier global event focused on large engines, power, drives, and propulsion. Attendees included experts in piston engines, gas turbine systems, non-shaft line propulsion, automation and controls, and digitalisation. The congress provided a unique platform for technical exchange and collaboration across industry, academia, and innovation-driven enterprises.

The presentation, delivered by Päivi Aakko-Saksa (VTT), was co-authored by Mårten Westerholm, Christer Söderström, Rasmus Pettinen, and Matti Reinikainen from VTT, alongside Leonidas Ntziachristos, Dimitris Kolokotronis, Athanasios Dimaratos, and Nikolaos Papadis from AUTH. It focused on “E-methanol for Shipping: Quality Considerations for Reduced Environmental Impact,” highlighting the environmental potential of e-methanol when used in dual-fuel engines to support cleaner maritime transport.

In addition to the presentation, the team also co-authored a full scientific paper on the topic, reinforcing their contribution to advancing sustainable maritime fuels. This research is part of the UP-TO-ME technology initiative, which aims to support the decarbonization of the marine sector. The findings will be disseminated further across the industry to accelerate the transition to low-emission shipping.
